Press Statements
We are keenly watching the situational developments in Lalgarh
and its adjoining areas where a large contingent of armed
forces BSF, COBRA, CRPF & State Armed Forces have been
deployed with all sophisticated weapons and instructions from
the state and central administration to recapture the area.
We, the MASUM strongly criticize and condemn any forms of
violence by any quarter, state or non-state, with a specific
condemnation for state sponsored violence.
Midnapur, Bankura and Purulia a western land mass of this
state with a majority inhabitation of indigenous population
deprived off their rights from pre and post independence era.
It is now a fact that the so called left front government
never heed their rights to water, education, shelter, health,
road, food, etc. as guaranteed by our constitution. Their
deprivation continues without any specific approach to seize
or control the ongoing onslaughts. Nevertheless, the present
political disposition increased their woes and sufferings by
their apathy.
We have previous experiences of police actions from
Marichjhapi to Nandigram, Singur and Char Bathanpara, etc,
where numerous villagers were tortured in extreme forms,
innocents were killed including minors and women were gang
raped by the state authorities and it is imminent that the
civil society has similar apprehension for this action also.
We severely criticize the attempt on the part of the State
government to engage police/ paramilitary/ so called Kobra
forces in Lalgrah region in the name of restoration of law and
order. The application of force by the government shall
further result into loss of human lives and properties. In the
part of the state which is a detrimental affect of ignorance
and non functional approach which increased the abject poverty
and backwardness of the said region. Though, it has been
proven fact that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) is
winning the elections at Lalgarh from 1997 in every stairs
till date. So, this is the political failure of this party,
that after ruling the state for last 32 years, they failed to
meet the actual deliverance for the local population.
The situation in Lalgarh and in other adjoining parts should
be considered as a political problem and it can be solved by
mutual consents and deliberations but not at the point of gun,
we have previous experience of Gorkhaland movement in 1980s
when the approach of the state defeated and till the problem
is continuing.
As Voltair said It is dangerous to be right in matters on
which the established authorities are wrong.".
Violence shall further breed violence and it will be severe
assault on the democratic fabric of the state. We condemn
violence from any side and appeal all to restrain from
violence.
