On 05th June 2010 at around 23.30 hrs a police team comprising of around 12 police personnel came to house of Mr. Mafik Ahmed by riding a jeep. None except one of them was in police uniform. They started asking Mr. Mafik and his family members about Mr. Ghosh; supposed to be a tenant of that house. He was not at the house at that time as reported by the Mafik’s family. Mr. Mafik and his family members failed to impart any information about the person to the police.

Those policemen then took Mr. Iftikar Ahmed; son of Mr. Mafik Ahmed, into their custody without preparing any memo of arrest at the spot and left the place. They also threatened the family members by saying that if they would not co-operate police by providing information about Mr. Ghosh then Iftikar also would not be released. No women police personal was present in the raiding party.

The family members of Iftikar got no information about him till more than 24 hours. On 07th June 2010 the family members along with the other villagers approached to Deganga Police Station to collect information about Iftikar. But they did not get any information from there and went to Barasat police station thereafter. They got information from the personnel of Barasat police station that Iftikar was taken by Beldanga police station of Murshidabad. After couple of days, the elder brother of Iftikar along with another villager went to Beldanga Police station (PS), Murshidabad. They were not properly entertained by the personnel of Beldanga Police Station. Police only told them that Iftikar was produced before Baharampore court and advised them to search at the said court.  Our fact finding team got information that on 07.07.2010 he was produced before Baharampore court after implicating him in a criminal case vide Beldanga P.S. case number 196/10 dated 06.07.2010 under section 379 of Indian Penal Code (committing theft); and sent to Beldanga PS on remand for seven days by Magistrate’s order, though he was not FIR named accused of the said case. On 14th June 2010 he again was produced before the court and sent to Baharampore Jail.

On the other hand it was also alleged by some villagers that on 14.07.2010 around 22.00 hours again a police team came to the house of Mr. Mafik and ransacked the room of his tenant. According to our latest information victim is still in Baharampore jail.

The victim family presently is surviving under psychological trauma and fear.
