Police indifference on abduction of Indian citizens

We have conducted our fact finding upon information received that two Indian Nationals Mr. Haider Ali and Mr. Aptar Sarder from District-Murshidabad have been forcibly abducted from the Indian Territory on 27/9/2009 by the jawans of Bangladesh Rifles(BDR) hailing from Yusufpur BDR Camp, Police Station-Charghat, District-Rajshahi, Bangladesh. The victims have been charged under section 4 of Bangladesh (Control of Entry) Act, 1952 and they are now reportedly detained in Rajshahi Jail.

The family of the victims claims that even though lodging complaint of such forcible abduction at Raninagar Police Station, the police are not showing any interest in helping the family or in ensuring the safe return of the victims. The police washed their hands by only recording the matter in General Diary Entry Book instead of recording any First Information Report. The family of the victims is anxiously waiting for their return. Our attached fact finding report gives details of this sordid incident.

In fact, there have been no proper security measures taken for the villagers residing near Indo-Bangladesh border line. Because the outposts of Border Security Force (BSF) are located about 10 kilometers away from the actual border line, the Indian villagers living near to the border and possessing their agricultural land beyond these BSF outposts in fact have no protection. They often face forcible abduction and severe torture in the hands of BDR without any reason. It is also well-known that the villagers of this area face illegal arrest, torture and abduction from the armed border forces belonging to both sides of the border.
