We conducted our fact finding
over an incident of police torture on the victim Mr.
Hadiul Seikh, District-Murshidabad, from religious
minority. The victim’s plight started from the day he
tried to lodge one complaint over lost of his motor-cycle
at Behrampore Police Station. Initially the police refused
to accept his complaint with out the supporting papers of
his motor-cycle. When he again visited the police station
with the relevant papers, the police instead of
registering complaint detained him at the police station
abusing him in filthy language and even subjected him to
physical assault. He was slapped under section 290 of
Indian Penal Code. The police reportedly did not provide
any food to him while in detention and also did not inform
his family of his detention. The police even forcibly took
his personal belongings consisting of wrist watch, golden
ring, money etc. without issuing any memo.
Though he got back his
motor-cycle and wrist watch from the police station but he
was shabbily treated by police on his demand to get back
the money and the rest of the articles forcibly seized by
the police.
The victim lodged complaint
before the higher police heads of the district against the
erring police officers of Behrampore Police Station but he
again came under threats from the higher police official
for daring to lodge complaint against police.
The
perpetrator police personnel by their alleged criminal
acts again proved that the common marginalized section
have to bear the burnt of their highhandedness and torture
by virtue of the impunity enjoyed by them causing
corresponding violation of the right to life and equal
protection of law of the victims. |
